Animation Project: Exibition 3 Artist statment

 Artist: Jay (Juliet Revell)

Title: Dragons-Ledge and Characters

Medium: Digital

Artist Statement:

I am showcasing the 3D models and backgrounds for the 2D animated scenes that will be used in my short film ‘How We Met’. The film is set at the current home of Ezaru’s Parents, Martha and Nova, it focuses of the close relationship between the mother and daughter duo through a narrated story told by Martha.

Dragons Ledge is set on the side of a mountain and is a small yet spacious home for a family of dragons. It was inspired by the buildings in the Victorian era but experimented with.

The characters have been fleshed out and plumped up in z-brush to help give them their unique builds helping give them characteristics to tell them apart. The last aspect that has been shown is the 2D backgrounds, they have a paper and orange tone to them all to help show that it is a past story being told, hence the paper texture mirroring a story book or picture book a parent may read to a child, and the orange haze making the scene appear older and stained in comparison to the sleek 3D of the present.

Animation Project: Lighting and Rig Update

Set Lighting:

I have done propper lighting for the inside of the set

Before I just put multiple pin lights near the lamp and shining it through a phong layer, which was apparently causing the particles I was seeing in render.

I changed to an ambient direction light and put one below the lamp facing upwards and one above facing downward, which. lit up the room and illuminated the lamp, the Phong was also changed to AI standard with the glass preset and emits a low warm glow

I have started on the outside lighting using an ambient directions for the outside natural light and I am playing around for the warm glow coming out of the windows and door.

Rigging:

It turns out I was using the wrong type of orient joint for connecting the bones to the master control on the rig, I was using the one in the skeleton menu, when I should have been using the one under Constrain.
I am still having trouble applying the IK handle though and having the wing working as I wish it too.

Animation Project: 2D Crit

Started drawing the characters into the 2D Section. I'm keeping it quite simple to fit with the already simplistic backgrounds

Animaiton Project: Rigging

SO

the dragon rigg is underway, most of the things such as fingers and tails will be controlled via key driver, and for the wings and legs they will have stretchy strings (forgot the tech name)

Anyway, I am having trouble with rigging the wings as the left wing reversed when connected or parented to the left wing control, I need to experiment and research to see If I can go without having it reversed.

It will take a bit of fiddling to get the wing right

Other then that the Rigg seems to be going nicely.

Animaiton Project: Setting

How we met Setting

The painting for the setting is done!!
while not to my dreams this will suffice for my animation

I have done basic lighting but will try on making it smoother or less overlapping shadows, I also need to make the couch area a bit lighter as that is where the animation (most of it) will be

Short Films:

Sing (Hungary)
I loved this, it was a very sweet story, I loved how the students banded together to stand up to unfair treatment of their teacher, I was mad that the teacher dared to silence some students as in real life this is very stunting to kids as it can give a heavy hit to their confidence and growth.
I loved when they stood up, not taking this unjust treatment.

Shok
This short film, well it was a sad one but one I could handle, I find it heartbreaking that things like this can happen, I didn't pick up on who was fighting who, as I didn't understand or don't understand much about that regon or why they were fighting but its sad seeing what people can go through, being put in rough conditions in a world they can't control.

Most (The Bridge (Czech Republic)

Animation Project: Exhibition Three

My third exhibition is showing some of the unfinished models and in progress 2D scenes

2D Animation and Storyboard

 OKAY so

Storyboard:
I am currently editing down and changing a few things, one is shortening the introduction and another I am cutting a chunk out of Martha's story though by doing this I will need to create a bridge scene so everything remains smooth and consistent.

AUDIO RECORDING TOMORROW  :)

As for the 2D, I have a nice paper texture that I am overlaying a rather simple lineless style. keeping it simple is not only good for a stylistic choice it also doesn't take me as long to draw as I would background in my more complex art, which at the moment, I just don't have the time for.

Animation Project: Z-Brush Progress

So I have been having trouble with Z-brush, at first it was because I modeled onto one tool (Mesh) and tried to export it, getting confused on the fact that when I exported the high mesh straight into Maya it came in separate pieces (same 3 pieces exported in)

seeing as trying to figure out how to get the one mesh to project onto three, I re-started the Z-brush modeling and imported the meshes are three separate tools to model onto, however this was not the end of my problems, I am currently trying to project the high mesh onto the low mesh but it is currently either, smoothing out all the modeling I have done or is creating random spikes in the mesh.
(I am currently stuck here and getting help, in the meantime

I am going to learn how to use substance painter and get a start on my setting.
and In terms of the characters, if I can't get the Z-brush out I may just have to do what I can in maya for the bodies and forgo the details in the model itself relying on the painting.

Reflection: Outcome:  Overall I am okaish with the outcome, the project ended with a lovely style that ended up meshing well with the 3D an...
