Screen Arts: Proposal (Progress)

Mashing Dimentions
(2D and 3D animation)

Research purpose, aims and objectives

Research:
To research the different methods of combining 2D and 3D animation together

The purpose of this research is to find the best method of combining the two mediums to use within my main project, exploring variations and combinations, I will be able to find out what method will work best through my own experiences, in other words practice based research

I aim, by the end of this project to have 4 experiments to show
- 3D onto a 2D Background, (Scenery built up with 2D assets and animation)
- 3D animation with 2D special effects (ect/ Impact, Particles
- 2D animated onto 3D background
-

Importance and relevancy to own practice addressed:

This is relevant to my own practice as I will be using both 2D and 3D in my main project, not only is it relevant to my project I am also wanting to improve on both 2D and 3D animation, combining the two is a way of utilizing both mediums and also exploring new techniques to add to my arsenal as an animator.

Specify what other research is being, or has been, conducted in this area

Early 3D Animation in 2D films:
2D was limiting, creating 3D object that could be painted and interacted with artists, which gave them a leg up, ' Tarzan' is an example of this, a program was developed to give the forest depth and an easier way to animate the dense jungle trees.
The use of 3D animation in background was a huge step in the animation industry, it made scenes that rotate and move easier as they can use a camera to move within the environment and then add the 2D animation.

Deep Canvas - Tool
Was created to make 3D enviroments for 2D films (used in films like Tarzan and Treasure Planet)

Animation Projects: Last Assets

I have no idea if I still need to do an artist statement so I'm doing one anyway:

How can I effectively represent the close relationship I have with my mother through an animated short film, using flashbacks as a plot device?
My Question uses my own relationship as a source of inspiration for two character in my story Cross Destiny, Ezaru a young fire dragon and her mother, Martha.
I’m my main subject of this exhibition, is showing the setting and mood my project begins with, The outside world is shown to be cold and dark, with a warm light flowing out of the mothers home, warm and embracing. Ezaru is looking out towards the cold work stuck in her own emotions and the fight she has had with her best friend.

My other goal was to design the style that the home will have, as this is a project that will extend further beyond this project, I also wanted their home to somewhat reflect my own, having aspects of mine while not being a direct copy of what my own home is like.

Bird Cage:
http://victorian-era.org/victorian-era-bird-cages.html
I have always had pets growing up, and still have so at home even away studying, I felt as if it would be nice for Ezaru to have the same, family still back at home while away on a journey.

Couch:
Low Resting
In Kitchen Area
(I usual talk with my mum there and is quite a nice place to talk with just us and the animals, overlooking our backyard)

http://victorian-era.org/fainting-couch-victorian-era.html/modern-fainting-couch

Layout:
I am wanting to have the layout similar to my own home,
shoved into a blender with Victorian Era Architecture
and the mountain the home resides in.

Animation Project: Fire Base home

Fire Dragon Homes:

Ezaru and Matha's Home:

Each magic base in Cross Destiny draws inspiration from a different culture.
The fire base, and by extension, fire dragons, draw inspiration from European architecture, specifically  from the Victorian Era, and variations of that Era's Architecture.

Ezaru's Home draws loosely from this Era, as you can tell in the entry door, and as I have yet to make, the couch, and interior Items.

At the moment it feels quite messy, the designs I am, making, I am not sure it entirely reflects what I am aiming for in the Fire dragons home,
That is the main reason I am mixing it with my own random designs and edging out to other types of architecture sprouting from the classic Victorian Era.

Animation Project:

 Artwork update:

I changed up the doorway to Ezaru's home a bit. The Fire Dragon Architecture is Europe predestined, more so towards the Victorian Era. It will mean editing the main part of my exhibition, however this should be okay, all I need to do is edit the ledge layer to the new door.

FireSnaps are often kept as fire dragons as pets. Martha keeps a few in her home.

The re-draw in progress (Background hidden)
I will also be editing the lake to stand out more, as well as bringing forward the foreground, to be more obvious.

Reflection: Outcome:  Overall I am okaish with the outcome, the project ended with a lovely style that ended up meshing well with the 3D an...
